Colophon

A colophon is the note at the end of a book that tells you how it was made. Presses that care about the made thing keep the habit. Here is ours.

Typefaces

Headlines are set in Fraunces, a variable serif by Phaedra Charles and Flavia Zimbardi of Undercase Type. Body text is Source Serif 4 by Frank Griesshammer. Interface labels are Inter by Rasmus Andersson. All three are open-source typefaces, served from our own shelf rather than a third-party foundry.

The Spectrum

The design system is built from the space between black and white: ink, graphite, slate, silver, fog, and paper, with a single brass accent borrowed from foil-stamped spines. The rule underneath the whole site is that the interface stays grayscale so that books, when they arrive, are the only color in the room. The site reads in light and in dark; the toggle in the header lets you choose, which felt appropriate for a press with our name.

The machinery

The site runs on WordPress with a custom rendering canvas, self-hosted fonts, and no advertising trackers of any kind. Forms are handled on our own server. The mail you get from us comes from our own domain.

The writing

A colophon that lists the typefaces and omits how the words were made is only half a colophon. The editorial content on this site, meaning the essays, the catalogue copy, and the notes that hold it together, is produced with substantial assistance from artificial intelligence under human editorial direction. A person decides what is published, edits it, and answers for it.

Our titles carry no invented author names, and no essay here carries the byline of someone who does not exist. Where a book has a human author, that author is named. What visitors send us, including manuscripts, never goes near an AI system; the privacy policy sets that out in full.
